English football had its first major change in many years back on this day in 1992, as the Premier League was formed.
The Premier League was made up of the 19 clubs who had avoided relegation from the First Division in the 1991/92 season and the three promoted from the old Second Division. These 22 clubs all resigned from the Football League on 27th May and the final plans were put in place for the historic season ahead..
Rupert Murdoch outbid ITV to land the television rights for the new Premier League. Murdoch’s Sky Television company were running at a loss but the TV rights for the Premier League soon changed that.
Football has changed beyond all recognition from the end of the 1991/92 season. It is now a business instead of a sport to many and fans have been priced out of going to watch the beloved team.
There is also an abundance of football on television and players are paid obscene amounts of money. Transfer fees are astronomical and all of these reasons stem back to the breakaway of the Premier League back in 1992.
