Liverpool lifted the European Cup for the third time in their history on this day in 1981, defeating Real Madrid 1-0 in Paris.
An Alan Kennedy goal eight minutes from time was enough to give Liverpool their third European Cup triumph in five seasons. The previous two European Cups were won by Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa lifted the trophy 12 months later in a six year spell of English dominance.
Joe Fagan’s Liverpool had beaten Oulun Palloseura, Aberdeen, CSKA Sofia and Bayern Munich on their way to the final. Finnish side Oulun were thumped 10-1 in the second leg at Anfield! Liverpool’s fans were treated to another nine goals in the next three home games (four against Aberdeen and five against CSKA before a goalless draw against Bayern), so they definitely got their money’s worth for European games that season at Anfield!
