West Ham United’s 18-year-old striker Jermain Defoe moved to Bournemouth on a season-long loan in September 2000. He scored against Cambridge United on this day in 2001 to complete a record of scoring in ten consecutive games.
Defoe’s incredible run started with Bournemouth’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat away to Stoke City on 28th October. He then went on to score against Peterborough United, Northampton Town (twice), Wycombe Wanderers, Swansea City, Millwall, Oxford United (twice), Luton Town, Wrexham and Cambridge United.
Defoe would go on and have a great career in the game, playing in the top-flight with West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth and Sunderland. He made 21 appearances for Toronto FC in 2014 and is currently plying his trade with Rangers in the Scottish Premier League at the age of 38.
He won 57 caps for England, scoring 20 goals. He also played in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
