It was on this day in 1978 that Arsenal put five goals without reply against their bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
42,073 fans were at White Hart Lane to see Arsenal match the second highest victory in the derby, a record that was held by Tottenham who beat Arsenal by the same scoreline on Christmas Day 1911.
The record victory between the two clubs came on 6th March 1935, when Arsenal won 6-0.
Alan Sunderland scored a hat-trick to cap a fine individual performance. Frank Stapleton and Liam Brady also got on the scoresheet, with Brady’s goal being a sensational curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.
Tottenham would get their revenge on 4th April 1983 and would beat Arsenal by the same scoreline. That game was also played in front of their home fans at White Hart Lane.
I can’t resist mentioning that Arsenal have the better record in the North London Derby! The Gunners have recorded 82 wins compared to Tottenham’s 66. 53 of the 201 matches between the two clubs have ended in a draw.
