Portsmouth won the First Division for the first and only time in their history in the 1948/49 season. They sealed the League title on this day back in 1949 with a 2-1 in over Bolton Wanderers at Burnden Park.
A crowd of 28,816 watched on as goals from Ike Harris and top goalscorer Peter Harris sealed the title.
Portsmouth were celebrating their Golden Jubilee season and it was the best season in their history. As well as winning the League, Pompey also reached the FA Cup Semi Final before losing 3-1 to Second Division Leicester City at Highbury.
Goalkeeper Ernest Butler and Wing-Half Jimmy Scoular were the only ever-presents in the League. Wing-Half Jimmy Dickinson and Left Winger Jack Froggatt played in all but one of the league matches.
Pompey started the season very well, going unbeaten in their first thirteen matches. They ended the season five points clear of Manchester United in second place.
