Mario Balotelli showed the world that he had a care-free attitude in the hours leading up to a Manchester Derby on this day back in 2011, creating carnage at a house party by setting off fireworks in his bathroom!
Whilst City fans nervously anticipated their team’s visit to their biggest rivals Manchester United later that day, the controversial Italian striker was partying the night away. You would normally expect top professional players to be resting prior to a Premier League match, especially one against your arch-rivals, followed by a very healthy breakfast. Not Balotelli who according to reports, the damage cost a whopping £400,000 to repair!
The incident didn’t seem to affect the City striker who scored the first two goals in the derby, which City won 6-1 at United’s Old Trafford home. When Balotelli scored the opening goal of the game, he celebrated by pulling his shirt over his head and unveiling a t-shirt underneath with ‘Why Always Me?’ written across the front. I think it must have been a rhetorical question as he definitely brought most of the controversy on himself!
Balotelli spent three years at Manchester City between 2010 and 2013, scoring 30 goals in 80 appearances. He managed to land himself in hot water numerous times during his time at the club and controversy seemed to follow him follow him throughout his career.
Manchester City would go on and win the league in the last seconds of the final game of the season at home to Queens Park Rangers, pipping United to the league title on goal difference. Mario Balotelli provided the assist for Sergio Aguero to fire in the winner.
