On This Day – 20th March

Aston Villa visited Leicester City in a First Division game on this day in 1976. The game finished 2-2 and all four goals were scored by Villa’s Chris Nicholl!

The defender scored twice at the right end and two past John Burridge, his team mate in the Villa goal.

Nicholl was the club captain the following season when Villa won the League Cup the following season. He then left to join Southampton, where he would spend six years before ending his playing career at Grimsby Town.

A year after retiring from the game, Nicholl returned to Southampton to become their manager. In the six years he spent at The Dell, he gave both Matthew Le Tissier and Alan Shearer their first-team debuts.
After three years away from the game, Nicholl spent three years at Walsall, guiding the club to promotion in his first full season in charge. He resigned in 1997 and later spent two years as the Assistant Manager at Northern Ireland.
