Sir Bobby Robson return back home on this day back in 1999, in his first match at St James’s Park as manager of Newcastle United.
Robson was born in County Durham and had followed Newcastle as a boy. After 31 years managing in four different countries and eight years as England manager, the opportunity to manage his boyhood club came in the first few weeks of the 1999/00 season.
Newcastle were bottom of the table and Sheffield Wednesday in 19th position, immediately above them.
Aaron Hughes opened the scoring, nodding in at the far post from a cross by Nolberto Solano. Alan Shearer then scored a first half hat-trick to make it 4-0 at the break.
Kieron Dyer scrambled in a fifth from close range before Gary Speed headed in the sixth from a corner.
There was still time for Alan Shearer to score from close range and then add his fifth and Newcastle’ eighth of the afternoon,
