Tottenham’s Willie Hall scored five goals for England on this day back in 1938 in a 7-0 demolition of Ireland in the Home Championships.
Hall scored a hat-trick in under four minutes in the first half- a record that stands to this day – before adding two further goals in the second half.
Tommy Lawton scored the first goal of the game after only six minutes to take his England goals tally to four in as many games. Hall then went on to score in the 35th, 37th and 38th minute to complete his first half hat-trick.
The Spurs Inside Right added a fourth and fifth goal in the 55th and 65th minute before Stanley Matthews added England’s seventh goal with fifteen minutes to go.
England’s opponents continued to play as a unified Ireland until 1950 when Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland became .
Northern Ireland would make their first appearance in a World Cup in the tournament eight years later. They would go on to play in the 1982 and 1986 Finals before the Republic qualified for the first time in 1990.
