This article might win you a point at a pub quiz one day! It was on this day back in 1969 that the first games was broadcast in technicolour on ‘Match of the Day’.
Liverpool hosted West Ham United at Anfield and beat them 2-0. World Cup winners Geoff Hurst and Bobby Moore were in the visitors starting line-up but were unable to prevent Liverpool from getting a win that would move them up to third place in the First Division.
Defender Chris Lawler forced in the opening goal after 27 minutes in front of The Kop. Bobby Graham then powered in a header past Bobby Ferguson from a deep cross from Tommy Smith after an hour to secure victory.
Liverpool’s neighbours Everton won the First Division that season, with Liverpool finishing 5th. West Ham ended the season in 17th position.
