Tottenham Hotspur became the first British club to win a European competition on this day back in 1963.
They beat Athletico Madrid 5-1 at the to win the European Cup Winners Cup. Jimmy Greaves and Terry Dyson both scored twice and John White scored the fifth.
The result was all the more impressive considering that Athletico were the favourites to win the game. They must have been some side as Spurs had won the League and Cup Double two years prior. They followed this up with an FA Cup win in the 1961/62 season hence the qualification for the European Cup Winner Cup!
Tottenham reached the Final having beaten Glasgow Rangers, Slovan Briatislavia of Czechoslovakia and OFK Beograd of Serbia. All of the ties leading up to the Final were played over two legs and Spurs scored an incredible 24 goals in those six games!
