Tottenham Hotspur became the first British club to win a European competition on this day in 1963 as they thumped Athletico Madrid 5-1 in Rotterdam to lift the European Cup Winners Cup.
Jimmy Greaves opened the scoring after 16 minutes, volleying in a cross from Cliff Jones. John White then added Spurs’ second on 35 minutes with a powerful drive through a crowded penalty area.
Enrique Collar scored from the penalty spot for Athletico two minutes after the restart. Terry Dyson scored a fluke third after his mishit cross dropped inside the near post.
Dyson volleyed in his second to make it 4-1 before Jimmy Greaves sealed the win with a fine individual effort. He took the ball from 20 yards inside his own half and scoring from 25 yards.
