It was on this day back in 1996 that England’s Euro ’96 tournament started gathering pace, as they brushed Scotland aside with a 2-0 victory over the Auld Enemy.
Second half goals from Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne settled were the difference between the two sides.
It could have been a completely different story though as David Seaman saved a Gary McAllister penalty with the score at 1-0.
Tony Adams knocked Gordon Durie to the ground inside the England penalty area and Seaman pushed the resulting penalty high over the crossbar.
Two minutes later, Paul Gascoigne scored a fantastic goal to settle the game and put England top of the group. I wrote a retrospective match report of the game and that can be found here.
