Liverpool put in a hugely impressive display at Old Trafford on this day in 2009. They visited league leaders Manchester United and came away with a resounding 4-1 victory.
It was United who took the lead midway through the first half. Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina came rushing out of his goal and dragged United’s Ji-Sung Park to the ground. Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the resulting spot kick.
Five minutes after Ronaldo’s opener, Fernando Torres equalised for Liverpool. The Spaniard chased after a long clearance by Martin Skrtel and slotted the ball past Edwin Van der Saar wo had raced out of his goal to narrow the angle.
Patrice Evra then brought Steven Gerrard down in the penalty area in the 44th minute. The Liverpool captain got up and took the penalty to give Liverpool the lead.
Nemanja Vidic got sent off after dragging Steven Gerrard to the floor in the 77th minute. Fabio Aurelio scored Liverpool’s third of the game from the resulting freekick before Andrea Dossena completed United’s misery in the final minute of the game with a well-taken finish.
The victory was Liverpool’s biggest win over Manchester United since they won 4-0 in September 1990. Despite the demoralising defeat, United went on and won the league. They finished four points ahead of Liverpool, who ended the season as runners-up.
