It was on this day 85 years ago that Ted Drake scored all seven of Arsenal’s goals in their 7-1 win over Aston Villa.
The seven-goal haul broke the Football League record for most goals scored by a player. Twelve days later, Robert Bell scored nine goals for Tranmere Rovers in their 13-4 victory in the Third Divison against Oldham Athletic to claim the record.
Bell would hold the record for only four months before Joe Payne scored ten in Luton Town’s 12-0 win at home to Bristol Rovers, also in the Third Division.
The seven goals that Drake scored that afternoon is still the highest number of goals scored by an Arsenal player in a single game.
