On This Day – 11th October

Bill Nicholson made his debut in the Tottenham Hotspur dugout on this day in 1958 as Everton came to visit White Hart Lane.
The Scot must have had a good impression on his new charges as they hammered the Toffees, winning 10-4!

Previous manager Jimmy Anderson had handed in his resignation a few days before the match and Nicholson was interviewed for the managers job. He was the first team coach and stated that he would rather start on the coaching staff. He was convinced to take the number one role and became the most successful Tottenham manager.

Spurs were 6-1 up at half-time and despite a gallant effort from Everton striker from Jimmy Harris, who netted a hat-trick, Tottenham came out 10-4 winners.
Bobby Smith scored four and Alf Stokes bagged a double for the home side. Johnny Ryden, Terry Medwin, Tommy Hermer and George Robb also scored for the home side. Bobby Collins scored Everton’s fourth goal to join Jimmy Harris on the scoresheet for the visitors.
