It was on this day back in 1959 that Billy Wright became the first England player to win 100 caps.
Wright was the England captain and lead the team out against Scotland in a Home International with the Auld Enemy. The hosts would win the game 1-0.
After the match, Wright was carried off the pitch on his team-mates shoulders. It was reminiscent of when another England captain Bobby Moore was also lifted onto his team mates shoulders seven years later. Moore’s time was after a team achievement however, as England had just lifted the World Cup!
Wright would go on to play five more times for his country. To date, only eight players have won more caps but the former Wolves man was definitely one of the more iconic England centurions.
