It took an England player 31 years to score the first hat-trick at Wembley Stadium, with that particular honour going to Chelsea’s Roy Bentley. It was on this day back in 1954 scored his treble in a British Home Championship game against Wales.
It was to be quite a season for the Chelsea captain as he would go on to lift the First Division title. This was the first time that the club would win the championship and they would have to wait 50 years until the next one!
Bentley scored his hat-trick in the space of twelve second half minutes, with his first coming after 70 minutes. Wales had already taken the lead in the first half through John Charles. You can read more about Charles by clicking here to see his entry in the ‘Far Post Header Hall of Fame’.
The Chelsea forward then nodded in a second six minutes later from close range before Charles scored again to equalise for the visitors.
Bentley completed his hat-trick with eight minutes remaining to secure victory and place in the history books.
Interestingly, the game was played on a Wednesday afternoon with a 2:15 pm kick off. The second half of the match was broadcast live on television with the viewers getting value for money as four of the five goals were scored then!
