On this day back in 2007, 19-year-old Lionel Messi scored the first career hat-trick of his career.
The diminutive Argentine couldn’t have picked a bigger setting, with his treble coming in the famous El Classico derby between his Barcelona side and their rivals Real Madrid.
Both sides shared six goals in a thrilling encounter. Messi’s first came after 11 minutes, six minutes after Ruud van Nistelrooy had given the visitors the lead. The Dutchman restored Real’s lead just two minutes later, but Messi came back with an equaliser just before the half-hour mark.
Sergio Ramos gave Real the lead for the third time in the match after 73 minutes but Messi scored his third of the match in time added on to complete his hat-trick and salvage a point for Barcelona.
In the fourteen years that have followed, Messi has scored a further 53 hat tricks and has amassed an incredible 705 career goals, with 634 of them for the Catalan giants.
