Newcastle United and West Ham United played out a 5-5 draw at St James’s Park on this day in 1960.
A rather meagre 20,106 crowd turned up for the game but were treated to a ten goal classic, with nine different players getting their name on the scoresheet!
Newcastle’s Len White scored was the only player to score twice in the game. John McGuigan, Bobby Mitchell and Jackie Bell also netted for the home team.
West Ham’s goalscorers were John Bond, John Dick, Malcolm Musgrove and Dave Dunmore. Newcastle also scored an own goal for one of West Ham’s goals.
West Ham ended the season in 16th position. Newcastle finished second bottom of the table and were relegated with Preston North End, who finished bottom.
