Newcastle United will have to pay more money to sack Steve Bruce if he keeps the club in the Premier League, according to reports.
The Magpies boss has come under increasing pressure in recent months over their poor performances on the pitch and position in the league table.
From looking unlikely to go down a bit earlier in the season, Newcastle now find themselves just two points ahead of 18th-placed Fulham, who are in the relegation zone.
F365 SAYS: Steve Bruce can’t survive new Newcastle nadir
In the aftermath of their defeat to Brighton before the international break, Toon For Change campaign group demanded a change of manager.
A statement said: “We implore the club to remove Bruce as coach immediately and appoint an ambitious manager ahead of the international break, who has the capability of keeping Newcastle United in the Premier League.
“There is still hope for the club this season, but we’re running out of time.”
They have only managed two wins in their last 18 Premier League matches but reports reckon Bruce’s job remains safe despite the tide of calls for him to go.
The PA news agency has said that the 60-year-old retains the full support of owner Mike Ashley despite the club’s descent into a desperate fight for Premier League survival.
And Football Insider claims that Bruce would ‘be entitled to an even bigger pay-off if he keeps Newcastle United up and is then sacked’.
It is understood that the former Manchester United defender would be entitled to a £4m fee if he was to be sacked now or before the end of the season.
The report adds that ‘it is written into Bruce’s contract that the potential pay-off rises for each season that he oversees Premier League survival.’
If Newcastle survive and keep Bruce then a Football Insider source has said the fee to sack him next season would be ‘considerably more than £4m’.
When asked after the loss to Brighton if he believed remaining at the helm at St James’ Park was the best way forward, Bruce said: “Well I believe that, I’ve been around the block a long time. That experience, (I’ve been) trying to draw on it over the last few weeks in particular.
“So as I’ve said I’m not the type to just walk away from a bad defeat, but you’re going to have to ask others.”
