New La Liga deal hands Barcelona huge boost in Messi’s contract renewal saga

It is no secret that Barcelona are in financial mess. The poor stewardship of Josep Maria Bartomeu has left the club in huge debt and under a crippling wage bill, leaving the Catalan giants unable to register their new signings—Aguero, Depay, Garcia, and Emerson—while also preventing them from renewing Lionel Messi’s contract.

Word on the street is that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has agreed to a new Camp Nou deal on significantly lower wages. Regardless, given that the Blaugrana have reached their salary limit as per La Liga regulations, they were faced with the task of lowering their wage bill before contemplating announcing Leo’s contract extension.

Fortunately for Barcelona, they have received a huge boost. As revealed by Marca, La Liga has agreed a mega-money investment deal with CVC Capital Partners worth a whopping 2.7 billion euros ($3.2BN), with this injection of cash set to “facilitate the growth of LaLiga Santander clubs” upon approval.

What does this mean for Barcelona and its 19 Spanish top-flight oppositions? Fifteen percent of the aforementioned €2.7BN can be spent on squad building and signing players while the remainder will be utilized for structural improvements, i.e. stadiums and other facilities.

TV income from the last seven seasons will play a huge role in deciding how that 15% will be distributed among La Liga’s 20 clubs, meaning a huge bulk of it will go to the country’s top two teams: Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Blaugrana will receive an estimated €270M ($319.6M) while Los Blancos could earn just below that figure, pocketing €261M ($309M).

This deal, which has been in negotiations for a year, will allow La Liga to increase their salary cap, meaning Messi’s contract renewal can go ahead as well as the registration of Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia, and Emerson. However, Barcelona aren’t the only ones who could strengthen their squad thanks to this cash injection as Real Madrid could invest their portion in their Kylian Mbappe pursuit.
