Gary Neville has called on the Glazer family to do “the honourable thing” and sell Manchester United.
The Glazer family has come under immense fan pressure to end their unpopular 16-year-old patronage of Manchester United, with their role in the conception of the collapsed European Super League proving to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Fans have staged protests outside the club’s Carrington training ground and Old Trafford in the weeks since, culminating in thousands congregating upon Old Trafford on Sunday and delaying the kick-off of the planned game against bitter rivals Liverpool.
Neville feels that fans are perfectly entitled to air their views and Manchester United are “rotting” under the Glazers.
“The Glazer family have been resilient and stubborn for many, many years,” Neville told Sky Sports. “I think that they are struggling to meet the financial demands that this club needs and have done for some time.
“If you think about the club that they picked up in 2004, it had the best stadium in the country, probably the best in Europe. It had the best training ground in the country, probably the best in Europe. It had a team that was getting to Champions League quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals regularly and winning the league every season, every other season.
“You look at the club now, this stadium – I know it looks great here but if you actually go behind the scenes it’s rusty and rotting. If you look at the training ground it’s probably not now one of the top five in this country.
“They haven’t got to a Champions League semi-final for 10 years. We haven’t won a league here at Manchester United for eight years.
“The land around the ground is undeveloped, dormant and derelict while every other club seems to be developing the fan experience and the facilities.
“The Glazer family are struggling to meet the financial requirements and the fans are saying it’s enough.
“My view on it is quite simply they are going to make a fortune if they sell this football club. If they put it up for sale now, the time would be right and it’d be the honourable thing to do.”
