Neville names Big Six club ‘most likely to crack’ and quit ESL

Gary Neville thinks Manchester City are the Premier League club “most likely to crack” over building pressure for the ‘Big Six’ to pull out of the planned European Super League.

City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal are the six clubs who have committed to become founding members of the 20-team breakaway midweek league.

The proposals were condemned by figures throughout the game with fans, pundits, journalists and former players coming together to share their disgust.

Despite that, an unnamed board member from one of the so-called ‘Big Six’ clubs said on Monday: “This isn’t a civil war, it’s a nuclear war. To be honest though the owners are not that worried about bad PR, they were expecting it. Their job is to maximise profits. The wider good of the game is a secondary concern.”

And Neville thinks while Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s players could turn FSG against the idea, he tips Man City as the most likely to cave.

Neville wrote on Twitter: “(Manchester United owner) Joel Glazer won’t turn easily! Jurgen Klopp and the senior players could turn FSG. Man City most likely to crack. This isn’t for them! The other 3 will follow the lead of others.”

Speaking on Sky Sports last night, Neville commented: “Why will the Abu Dhabi people build a network of football? What they have done is unbelievable to the east of Manchester.

“They created a legacy around there, arguably for marketing purposes. Why are they doing this? They don’t need money, they have got Pep [Guardiola], the most amazing manager. City must fold.”

And Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol now claims that some of the executives of the ‘Big Six’ clubs are getting “cold feet” over the proposals.

Solhekol tweeted: “Strong differences of opinion emerging in private between breakaway clubs. Some of execs involved believe they’re being hung out to dry & are beginning to get cold feet. They’re nervous & disappointed about way it’s been handled. One says: ‘This is not what we signed up for.’”

That comes after Daily Mail journalist Oliver Holt claimed overnight that two clubs were “close to losing their nerve”.

Holt tweeted: “Hearing the first cracks may be beginning to appear in the ugly, misshapen edifice of the ESL. Told two English clubs are close to losing their nerve.”
