Neville recommends three Man Utd makeweights in Kane deal

Gary Neville has named the three players Man Utd should look to include in any deal to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Kane since reports broke a week ago that he has told Spurs that he wants to leave in the summer transfer window.

An interview with Neville later in the week added more fuel to the fire as he suggested he needed to have a conversation over his future with chairman Daniel Levy.

Chelsea and Man City have also been linked with Kane and when asked about the possibility of the Man Utd target moving this summer, Neville suggested Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Daniel James as possible “makeweights” in a deal.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s difficult. City don’t tend to break their budget do they, £65m/£70m [is their transfer record] – they’re not going to get him for that.

“So it’s whether they could get a player to Tottenham that would makeweight the deal. And I think that’s what United maybe have in Martial, James and Lingard.

“They’re types of players you could send there [to Spurs] plus a chunk of money and it might make Daniel Levy happy, I don’t know.”

On his interview with Kane, Neville added: “In that interview with me, he never said that he wanted to leave Tottenham. I don’t know what part of the interview people think he said that.

“He said ‘there was a conversation to be had and the chairman, to be fair to him, wants to accept a bid for him’.

“He never said that ‘he wanted to leave’. I think he’s at a point in his career where it’s a reflection point. It’s the same for Tottenham also.”

Spurs face a huge summer ahead, with the search for Jose Mourinho’s successor still going on – though understood to be reaching its end-game – and a battle to keep Kane.

Sealing a place in UEFA’s inaugural third-tier competition continues Tottenham’s run of qualifying for European football, but outgoing interim boss Ryan Mason says that does not constitute success this season.

“First of all, we wanted to be in the Champions League. I’ve said all along, it’s disappointing where we are in this moment,” Mason, who will be returning to his role in the academy, said.

“It’s very disappointing for the football club. It’s important we’re in Europe, not the European competition we’d want to be in.

“So it was important we finished today with a win, for many different reasons. Yes, it’s not the competition we want to be in next year, but it’s a European competition, and we will respect it, that’s for sure.”
