Neville: ‘Dominant’ Man U star a possible partner for Maguire

Gary Neville has suggested that Scott McTominay would act as a good central defensive partner for Harry Maguire.

The Scotsman joined Manchester United when he was just five years old. He played as a striker for much of his youth career until he was converted into a central midfielder.

McTominay made his first-team debut for the Red Devils in May 2017, as a late substitute against Arsenal.

The 24-year-old has been a regular for Manchester United over the past four seasons. He has played 114 times for his boyhood club since making his debut.

The midfielder is arguably enjoying his best season to date this term. He has already featured 30 times for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in 2020/21 and he has scored seven times.

The centre-back position has been a troubling one for Manchester United in the past couple of years. Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have taken it in turns to start alongside Maguire.

Speaking on the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel, Neville insisted that McTominay has all the attributes needed to succeed at centre-back:

“I thought McTominay would be Maguire’s centre back partner. He’s quick, aggressive, he gets up the pitch, can pass well as a defender, dominant.

“I don’t see much difference between him and Stones, Rice, [Tottenham’s Eric] Dier, there’s a lot of similarities.”
