Neville, Carra hit out at ‘disinterested’ Arsenal and ‘lazy’ Aubameyang

Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have slatted Arsenal and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after their damaging defeat to Liverpool.

The Gunners fell to a 3-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s side on Saturday night. The manner of their performance was far more concerning than the result, though.

Mikel Arteta’s men only registered three shots over the course of the 90 minutes. Of these, only two were on target.

Appearing on Monday Night Football, as cited by Football London, Neville said he found it “uncomfortable” watching Arsenal:

“At half-time on Saturday I was really uncomfortable with what I’d seen,” Neville said. “At the end of the game I did something I don’t ordinarily do – I usually just get off.

“I sat around for a few minutes with Martin Tyler [and asked’ ‘what was that?’

“I was really uncomfortable with what I saw and there have been a number of times in the last 10 years when I’ve been doing Monday Night Football where my anger has emerged and grown over a couple of days since the game.

“Coming out of Saturday, we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes at Arsenal, but I have to say there was a few of those players in that front part of the pitch – it looked like a little mafia.

“It looked like a little group of players who weren’t comfortable.

“Like there was a disconnect between them and the manager.

“Like the manager looked like he had enough of them, he had that glazed-eye look. It’s instinct, but we’ve been around football quite a long time to know when a group of players are disinterested.”

Aubameyang was ineffective once again on Saturday. The forward’s form has dipped significantly this season in comparison to the rest of his time at the club.

As cited by The Mirror, Carragher suggested that Aubameyang brings nothing to Arsenal when he does not score:

“He’s the superstar, if you like. I think his performances this season have been… what’s the word I’d use… lazy, at times.

“I don’t care how many goals he gets. He’s won Golden Boots in the past. But he’s a player now who, if he doesn’t score a goal, doesn’t bring absolutely anything to this team, and that’s a big problem.

“I watched him last week at West Ham and I’ve watched him four or five times this season and thought ‘I need more from you’. And that’s exactly what we saw on Saturday.

“He was late in the North London derby, and the manager took a big decision (to drop him) which paid off. I’m expecting a reaction from Aubameyang. He then plays midweek, misses a few chances and is not at his best in the Europa League game.

“I watch him against West Ham and I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen this season. When he went off the pitch in the 77th minute Arsenal scored and he celebrated with Lacazette. That was the most energetic I’ve seen him this season.

“He then gets brought off again against Liverpool – this is your star man, being brought off on the back of me wanting to see a reaction.”
