Neville: ‘Big six’ should be docked points for Super League involvement

Gary Neville has called for the Premier League’s ‘big six’ to be deducted points due to them signing up for the controversial European Super League.

On Sunday news emerged that the Premier League’s top teams had agreed to proposals for the European Super League.

As part of this new league, the 15 founder teams would receive between £310m and £89m as a guaranteed payment that could be used to improve their stadiums, training grounds, etc.

Speaking during Man United’s game against Burnley, as cited by Manchester Evening News, Neville labelled the plans as an “absolute scandal”.

Neville said: “I’m not against the modernisation of football competitions, we have the Premier League, the Champions League, but I think to bring forward proposals in the midst of Covid and the economic crisis for all clubs is an absolute scandal.

“United and the rest of the ‘Big Six’ that have signed up to it against the rest of the Premier League should be ashamed of themselves.

“The European Super League – are Arsenal in that? They’ve just drawn with Fulham, Manchester United are drawing with Burnley.

“I can’t concentrate on the game, me, they should deduct all six teams that have signed up to it. Deduct points from them all, to do it in a season is a joke.”

During half time at Old Trafford, Roy Keane insisted that these plans come down to the “greed” of the clubs:

“I think it comes down to money, greed. It doesn’t sound good, lets’ hope it’s stopped in its tracks.

“We talk about the big clubs. Bayern Munich are one of the biggest clubs in the world – at least they’ve made a stand, which is a good start.”

Micah Richards then added: “What happens to the fans? What happens to the memories the fans have had over the years? They’re just forgotten about because of money? I think it’s a disgrace to be honest with you.”

The Premier League have released an official statement and they have condemned the proposal and the actions of the teams involved:

“The Premier League condemns any proposal that attacks the principles of open competition and sporting merit which are at the heart of the domestic and European football pyramid.

“Fans of any club in England and across Europe can currently dream that their team may climb to the top and play against the best.

“We believe that the concept of a European Super League would destroy this dream.”
