‘Tools and toys’ – how Nagelsmann dealt with 5-0 Man Utd loss

RB Leipzig’s assistant coach Moritz Volv has explained why Julian Nagelsmann is “second to none”.

Nagelsmann is one of the hottest young managerial prospects in Europe and faces another big test against English opposition on Wednesday as his Leipzig side attempt to come back from 2-0 down at Anfield.

The German side are also in the running in the Bundesliga this season, currently a close second to Bayern Munich at the top of the league.

And Volz – the former Arsenal and Fulham defender – gave an insight into what life is like working with Nagelsmann

“His coaching qualities are second to none what I’ve experienced because he analyses very thoroughly and very well,” Volz told talkSPORT.

“He’s got a really sharp eye both for analysing our team’s performance and also the opponents.

“For the game preparation and also in the midst of things on the sideline.

“He sees developments and tactically so astute he can make changes very quickly.

“He is really highly driven, he’s a great competitor. You see that he’s so passionate, it’s not a show or anything.

“We play a lot of staff games and he’s just as passionate. He loves to win and gives it his all in anything he does.

“It’s something the players feel as well.

“He finds the right words in handling the players as well in setting the right frame for each game. That is also a great quality for a manager to have.

“The other thing I would point out is how he manages the struggles of a head coach being the team and team’s performance the main priority but juggling all the other demands that the modern day throws at you.

“The challenge for all top managers will be to find a good balance, find moments to de-stress where you can recover yourself, his energy and active lifestyle, his love for nature and enthusiasm for trying new things is a great release for him.

“You feel that he’s really balanced and finds ways of recharging the batteries and is always focused and really sharp.”

Leipzig suffered a shock 5-0 defeat against Man United in the group stage of the competition at Old Trafford and Volz explained how his boss deals with such disappointments.

“He’s got a great selection of toys, we call them, they could be big toys from cars, he’s got a selection of motorbikes. He’s constantly looking from new tools and toys,” Volz added.

“We obviously lost at Old Trafford 5-0 and was a result none of us saw coming, we stayed the night in Manchester as we trained the next day for those who didn’t play so much, and travelled back.

“You can imagine the mood, a 5-0 loss, displeasing performance, it wasn’t great and we arrived back here and Julian had one of his new toys delivered.

“As we were changing into our gear he was blurting out this weird karaoke sounds from this voice box machine that he’d had delivered.

“All the stress and disappointment was lifted.”
