Mourinho mocks Liverpool on Gerrard slip anniversary

Jose Mourinho took to Instagram to poke fun at Liverpool on the seven year anniversary of Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea.

With Liverpool seemingly on the cusp of ending a 24-year wait for a league title on April 27 2014, Gerrard miscontrolled a pass and slipped on the stroke of half-time at Anfield.

Demba Ba to raced clear to give Chelsea a crucial lead, before Willian added another late on to secure a 2-0 win.

The Blues had just 27 per cent possession under Mourinho that day, as they ended Liverpool’s 11-game winning streak to blow open the title race.

And Mourinho – who was sacked by Spurs last week – has had some fun in his downtime, uploading a picture of himself keeping the ball away from Gerrard on the touchline on that memorable day.

He captioned the picture: ‘Anfield, April 27th 2014. Ball possession.’

Speaking back in March 2019, Gerrard admitted that moment against Chelsea will always be one which will taint his career with an element of sadness.

“This wound has been open since that experience,” he said.

“I’m not sure it will close because I can’t change that experience. It doesn’t affect how I feel towards what I’m looking in on now.

“I don’t drive myself crazy over it. At the same time, it was such a big year. It was the trophy that eluded me. I’m always going to look back and wish it was different.

“I think about it most days. A Liverpool team winning the league would help how I feel for sure.

“When I analyse it properly I understand it wasn’t just that moment (the slip) but still part of my head thinks it is.

“People say to me, to make me feel better, it was over 38 games.

“But I still know, behind what you’re saying to me, that moment was so big.”
