Montemurro delighted to ‘go out on a high’ as Arsenal boss

Joe Montemurro finished his reign at Arsenal with a 9-0 Women’s FA Cup win over Championship outfit Crystal Palace.

Noelle Maritz scored twice while Kim Little, Beth Mead, Danielle Van De Donk, Jordan Nobbs, Vivianne Miedema, Jill Roord and Katie McCabe also found the net.

Australian Montemurro leaves North London as a fan favourite after three-and-half-years with the club.

He said: “I felt all week we wanted to go out on a high. It’s been great to get involved with the club and I can’t put into words how it’s been.

“It’s been brilliant from the fans and I cherish every word. They understand I made the decision on what’s best for the club.”

The Gunners breezed into the last eight.

Montemurro added: “It was a nice summary game to recap everything we’ve worked on over the past years. We finished a brave way, trying some new things and taking some risks.

“I’m sure the club will go on to bigger and better things.”

Crystal Palace manager Dean Davenport admitted that Arsenal were fitter, stronger and had the quality that his semi-professional outfit could not offer but was more than proud of his side.

He said: “I thought it was outstanding to be only 1-0 down with 41 minutes on the clock. We did really well and it’s a learning curve to build on going forward.

“It proves the gap between the WSL and the Championship and what we need to bridge this as a current semi-pro side.”
