Mohamed Salah equals Ian Rush and Steven Gerrard’s Champions League goalscoring record

Mohamed Salah is just a goal away from becoming Liverpool’s outright top-goalscorer of the Champions League at Anfield after matching Ian Rush and Steven Gerrard’s record with his goal in the clash with AC Milan. The 29-year-old forward found the back of the net to pull his side back into the game, consequently closing in on another personal milestone.

Liverpool started on a bright note in the night’s clash at Anfield, taking the lead through an own-goal by Fikayp Tomori. However, one the stroke of half-time, they were handed a massive scare after Milan scored two quick-fire goals through Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz. Mohamed Salah then placed them on course to eventually grab the win, scoring his 14th goal in the Champions League as a Liverpool player to tie atop the leaderboard with Steven Gerrard.

A thunderous strike by Jordan Henderson in the 69th minute following a poorly cleared corner eventually secured all the three points for the Reds. The 0-0 draw between Atletico Madrid and FC Porto meant that Jurgen Klopp’s men will finish the first gameweek at the top of the Group B.

For Mohamed Salah, the feat also meant that he is currently just three goals behind Steven Gerrard on the all-time top-goalscorers leaderboard. The English midfielder managed 30 goals in the continental cup competition in his spell at the club.
