Salah not to blame for Reds goal drought, says Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum says Mohamed Salah is blameless when it come to Liverpool’s goalscoring woes this season.

Salah registered 25 goals for the campaign for a third time in four years when notching in the Champions League win over Red Bull Leipzig on Wednesday night.

However, since bagging two in the 7-0 romp against Crystal Palace on December 19, he has only scored four from 14 Premier League appearances.

The last of those came in the 3-1 defeat to Leicester City on February 13, with the Egyptian failing to net in the four games since.

Three of those four fixtures have also seen the Reds draw a blank but Wijnaldum believes Salah’s prolific overall record for Liverpool – 119 goals in 191 appearances – is where the focus should be.

“We hope that he can continue doing that [scoring goals] because that will make it easier for us to win games,” he told LiverpoolFC.com

“[It’s] amazing what he is doing. He is always searching for a goal, always searching to come into positions to score a goal.

“Yeah, 25 is a good number – hopefully he can continue scoring goals.”

Sadio Mane, who has scored in back-to-back Champions League ties, has managed only three Premier League goals since the Merseyside derby in mid-October, while Roberto Firmino has six goals in 37 Premier League appearances.

The return from injury of Diogo Jota – nine goals in 20 appearances – has provided the Reds with more attacking intent and Wijnaldum said it is important for the creative players to take the scoring onus off Salah.

“This season, unfortunately, we’re in a position and a situation where we don’t score every chance we have,” he said.

“It [creating chances] gives you a really good feeling; sometimes also you’re disappointed because you don’t score the chances you get but that we create chances again is a good thing.”

Liverpool head into the weekend in eighth, seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

A trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers lies in wait on Monday and Wijnaldum believes successive 2-0 wins over Leipzig have put the Reds in a good place.

“It helps to get confidence back when you have results and especially when you play a good game.

“But it’s not a guarantee that you’re going to win the next couple of games, so we just have to realise that we have to give everything and work even harder than before to get the results back that we had before.”
