Arteta questions Luiz red card after disappointing Wolves loss

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has questioned David Luiz’s red card during the 2-1 loss at Wolves, saying he ‘cannot see any contact’.

The Gunners started the match brightly but saw Bukayo Saka’s goal ruled out for offside.

They went ahead in the 32nd minute thanks to a great individual effort from Nicolas Pepe.

He got the better of Nelson Semedo and fired the ball into the far corner.

Wolves equalised just before half time, however. David Luiz seemed to trip Willian Jose in the box.

He was sent off by the referee and Ruben Neves scored the resultant penalty.

Arsenal conceded again in the second half as Joao Moutinho struck a brilliant shot from 30 yards that beat Bernd Leno.

The keeper was sent off in the 72nd minute after handling the ball outside of his box. He misjudged the flight of the ball and palmed it out of play.

Speaking about the match, Arteta said: “The team was really on top of the game, we should have been three or four-nil up and in that action [the Luiz red card] the game changed completely.

“I’ve seen it ten times in different angles and I cannot tell you where the contact is. If they have another 50 different angles to watch it, maybe I will be surprised. I looked at several different angles and I cannot see any contact there.

“The team kept trying, kept playing, kept believing. At half time the boys were so animated because they believed they could still win the game. Obviously it was an incredible goal from long range, before that they didn’t have any chances. But still we lost and we have to react.

“We hit the post, hit the bar, the keeper made a couple of great saves. We played exceptionally well, scored one goal and should have scored three or four and had more of a gap, but obviously you can’t concede two red cards in the Premier League. I don’t have any [complaints about] the second red card.

“The team is encouraging me every day to believe in them and to give me a positive feeling all the time.”

Arteta will be hoping for a reaction in the Gunners’ next match. They face Aston Villa on Saturday.
