Merson compares £30m-rated Arsenal target to Wright

Paul Merson has compared Brentford forward Ivan Toney to Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

Toney came through the ranks with Northampton Town and his form for them earned him a move to Newcastle United in 2015.

The striker only ended up making four appearances for the Magpies. Most of his time at the club was spent on loan at teams in the football league.

The Englishman left Newcastle permanently in 2018 to join Peterborough United for around £650,000. He had a highly-successful two years there as he scored 49 times from just 94 games.

This earned Toney a move to Championship side Brentford. The Bees signed him for a fee that could potentially rise to £10m with add-ons.

The forward is enjoying a phenomenal season in the second tier. He has 25 goals from 36 games for the promotion-chasers so far this campaign.

Toney is already being linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, and Brentford have reportedly slapped a £30m price-tag on him. Arsenal and West Ham are among the clubs said to be interested.

Writing in The Daily Star, Merson suggested that Toney is a player who is always “desperate” to score:

“He’s a natural goalscorer who is desperate to score.

“Toney reminds me of Ian Wright. His movement, the way he enjoys himself, and he can scores all kinds of goals too.

‘Wrighty was someone who, even if you’ve won 4-0, would come off the pitch with the hump if he hadn’t scored himself.

“Toney looks a bit like that and that’s what Brighton need. I see enough in them to get out of trouble this season.”
