McGoldrick: Wilder’s Sheff United departure ‘came from nowhere’

David McGoldrick has insisted that Sheffield United’s players had no inkling that Chris Wilder was leaving and that they found out via Twitter.

The reports first circulated that Wilder was to leave Sheffield United on Friday 12 March. But his departure was not made official by the club until the day after.

Wilder – who had two spells at the Blades as a player – left with them bottom in the Premier League. They had only picked up 14 points from their 28 league games.

This comes after Wilder had enjoyed a lot of success as manager of the Blades. He guided them to two promotions as they returned to the Premier League for the first time since 2006/07.

In their first season back in the top flight, Sheffield United enjoyed a remarkable season as they finished ninth in the table. This was their highest finish since the 1991/92 campaign.

McGoldrick told talkSPORT that the week that Wilder left was “really tough” for the players:

“It was tough. The weird thing about it was that it came out of the blue from nowhere.

“We got into training as normal, got into the treatment room and someone said, ‘Look at this on Twitter! Someone’s posted something saying the gaffer’s going to be sacked’.

“Usually, you hear certain things. We heard there was talk a few months ago. We had found some form.

“There was no confirmation for 48 hours, the boys didn’t properly meet Hecky [Heckingbottom].

“People think we’ve seen him a lot, but we’re in different bubbles completely. The Under-23s aren’t allowed anywhere near us.

“He hasn’t seen how we work and we haven’t seen how we work. To be thrown in at the deep end for the Leicester game was a really tough week for the lads.”

McGoldrick offered words of support to his former boss, as he claimed that he will get a “big job” elsewhere.

He added: “I’m sure he’ll get a big job somewhere.

“Celtic need someone to go in there with big ideas, Wilder will go in there with his own ideas.

“He would change that club, he’d get the boys playing for them.”
