Ally McCoist expects Tottenham to “break the bank” for a ‘keeper like Leeds United’s Illan Meslier to replace Hugo Lloris.
Lloris has been heavily linked with a Spurs exit ahead of this summer. He has been specifically linked with PSG, who are managed by former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.
But the goalkeeper is now expected to remain a Spurs player into the 2021/22 season. His current contract is due to expire in 2022.
‘What’s the f***in’ point?’ – Five players for Spurs to build around
Meslier has impressed for Leeds this term. The 21-year-old has been one of their most consistent performances during their return campaign in the Premier League.
McCoist has insisted that Spurs will have to pay a lot of money if they are to find a suitable replacement for Lloris. He told Football Insider that Leeds would be willing to “break the bank” to keep Meslier:
“It’s not easy to lose Lloris and find a goalkeeper of that level immediately, without paying top dollar. Some of the costs of goalkeepers over very recent years…
“He’s a hugely consistent goalie, I wouldn’t rate him the best in the world. I do think there are better out there.
“Would Spurs have to break the bank and go for a Meslier or someone like that? Leeds would probably break the bank to keep him. That’s the sort of levels we’re talking about now.”
Elsewhere, Charlie Austin has been asked again about Patrick Bamford’s England hopes. This came after he claimed that his omission is down to “snobbery” in football.
The forward told Laura Words (talkSPORT) that Bamford “almost has to go” to the Euros:
“Yeah I still do believe that, what do you want?
“When you’re picking forwards what do you want, goalscorers? Please, the only person that’s scored more than him is England captain Harry Kane.
“You expect Bamford to be in there [England squad]. For me I think he almost has to go.
“He’s ticked every box to get into the Euros squad but then you look at it and go ‘it’s easier to leave him out because he plays at Leeds’, that’s poor.”
