Martinez focused on Euros despite links to Tottenham

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has insisted that now is not the time to discuss his future despite him being linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are still on the lookout for a new permanent manager. This is since the departure of Jose Mourinho on the week of the Carabao Cup final.

Ryan Mason has taken the job on an interim basis. He led his side out at Wembley for the Carabao Cup final as they were beaten 1-0 by Man City.

Five of the most costly contract renewal mistakes…

Martinez is among the favourites to take over at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag and Antonio Conte have also been linked with the vacant job.

The former Everton boss is currently in charge of the Belgium national team. He has been in the job since 2016 and under him, Belgium finished in third place at the 2018 World Cup.

The 47-year-old’s current deal concludes at the end of this year. During his latest press conference (as cited by Football London), Martinez said he is fully focused on this summer’s Euros:

“We have been looking forward to this tournament for three years. Now is not the time to talk about my future.”

Meanwhile, Martinez has criticised Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger for his “reckless” challenge on Kevin De Bruyne in the Champions League final:

“For me, Rudiger is very, very fortunate. When you look at the replay, there’s no clash of heads.

“He’s properly leaving the shoulder against Kevin. He seems concussed and we will see the state of that.

“But that leaves a sour taste, because Rudiger’s holding his head, it’s almost that he wants to show that he’s hiding something.

“For me, it was excessive force and it was reckless. And it should have been a red card.

“Kevin is not a player that goes down for no reason. You can see the pain and it’s a swollen eye.”

After the game, Rudiger took to Twitter to apologise to De Bruyne:

“I’m really sorry for Kevin de Buryne’s injury. Of course this was not intentional from me.

“I’ve already been in touch with Kevin personally and I really wish him a speedy recovery and hope we can see him back on the pitch very soon again.”
