Manchester United have increased their efforts to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer.
Kane is publicly considering his future at Tottenham at the end of a seventh straight season without team honours.
Daniel Levy is said to have been angered at the approach the striker has taken and the Tottenham chairman remains determined to keep his club’s best player despite interest from Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.
Kane has more than three years remaining on his contract and thus is not likely to be allowed to leave for anything less than £100m, but Manchester United are ‘ready to compensate’ the 27-year-old for any earnings lost if he forces a move through by submitting a formal transfer request.
The Sunday Times report on the ‘substantial financial package’ Manchester United will present to Kane, including a ‘multimillion-pound signing-on fee’ if he loses out on loyalty payments from Tottenham.
The Glazer family will pursue the deal as they ‘seek to quell fan protests’, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘is pushing’ for it to go through. The manager is even ‘open to selling’ Anthony Martial to free up space and money for his arrival.
Manchester United are likely to launch a charm offensive in the summer when England meet up for European Championships duty.
Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford ‘will use their friendship’ with Kane to persuade him to join, seemingly at the behest of potential future strike partner Edinson Cavani.
The Sun on Sunday quote a source as saying: “All the players have been discussing Harry leaving Spurs.
“The English players plan to work on him when they meet up. They know how good he is and though he would present competition to someone like Marcus, they are excited at the thought of playing with him.
“Edinson has not been shy in telling everyone how highly he rates him.
“His English isn’t great – but he can get his message across.”
We presume that is about Cavani, not Kane.
“Harry is a similar kind of player, so all the players think he would fit well into their system as they like to play on the counter-attack, like Spurs do.”
