Manchester United should ‘go all out’ to sign Aguero

Signing Sergio Aguero in the summer should be a priority for Manchester United, says Robbie Savage.

Having amassed 257 goals in 384 appearances for City, the Argentine is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of the Premier League era.

The announcement that he is calling time on a ten-year stay at the Etihad has triggered interest from a host of top clubs.

Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with the diminutive striker.

However, Savage, writing in the Daily Mirror, believes United would be missing a trick if they didn’t consider an audacious swoop for City’s record goalscorer.

“At 32, surely he’s got a couple of seasons left in the tank at a top-four club, so if United’s new director of football John Murtough wants to make waves, there’s a sure-fire way of doing it,” said Savage.

“For me, Aguero is the best foreign player of the Premier League era.

“Barring a miracle, he will leave City as a five-times title winner, and the highest compliment I can pay him is this: If you needed someone to bury a chance in the box to save your life, I would pray it fell to Sergio Aguero.”

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has revealed that a statue of the striker has been commissioned to stand alongside those currently in work to honour Sergio’s former team-mates David Silva and Vincent Kompany.

With his legendary status seemingly secure, Savage says a move to their fierce rivals would not tarnish his legacy.

“If Manchester United came calling for his services, why would he not jump at the chance?

“He would be able to stay in the area, knowing United should be offering him Champions League football next season. And he would give them a cutting edge in the box that has sometimes been missing when visiting teams have sat deep at Old Trafford this season.”

With Erling Haaland being touted around Europe and rumours about Harry Kane’s availability persisting, there are options around for clubs looking to upgrade their forward line.

However, former Leicester City and Wales midfielder Savage fears United could end up empty-handed if they put too much focus on one marquee signing.

“I would go all-out to get [Aguero].

“For all their pulling power, there are no guarantees United will be able to sign Erling Haaland or Harry Kane this summer.

“Why hesitate when the greatest Premier League finisher of all is out there?”
