Sancho the priority for Man United, not Kane

Manchester United will prioritise the signing of Jadon Sancho over Harry Kane this summer, according to reports.

Sancho, 21, has been a target of United’s for many years, and the club were close to finalising a deal for him last summer.

Borussia Dortmund’s asking price for the winger, thought to be in excess of £100million, warded United off, but they will head into the upcoming transfer window with renewed impetus, having failed to win any silverware during the 2020/21 campaign.

The club feel the acquisition of Sancho will help to bridge the gap between them and this season’s champions Manchester City, and with the Englishman set to be available for a bargain price of £75million, United’s transfer work will be geared towards his signature.

According to the Mirror, this could see United pull out of the race to sign Kane.

It is thought that Daniel Levy will demand a fee in the region of £200million for Spurs’ talisman, who recently informed the club of his desire to leave.

However, with Edinson Cavani’s contract extension confirmed, a new striker is no longer deemed a top priority by United, with the club focusing instead on improvements in other areas of the pitch.

Sancho, who has contributed 16 goals and 20 assists in 38 games for Dortmund this season, would fill the void on the right-hand side of United’s attack, while Raphael Varane, another top target, would help to address the glaring issues at centre-back.

There are also questions over whether the signing of Kane would be financially viable, with uncertainty lingering over the return of fans next season.

United, with their huge commercial revenues, have coped better than most during the pandemic, but still reported a loss before tax of £21million.

As a result, sporting director John Murtough will have to be selective in his transfer dealings, and the suggestion from the Mirror is that Kane will be sacrificed for Sancho.

According to Dortmund chief Michael Zorc, the winger has “a gentleman’s agreement” to leave the club at the end of the season.

He told German publication ARD: “We already had a gentlemen’s agreement with Jadon last year that he can switch under certain conditions.

“He’s been with us for a couple of years. However, this agreement does not exist with Erling [Haaland].”
