Man Utd vs West Ham live on September 22, 2021: Hammers eye revenge after thrilling weekend clash

Preview

The third round of the Carabao Cup is here, with Man United preparing to make their entrance into this competition. Unfortunately, the Red Devils will be in for a rough start as they will be facing Premier League rivals West Ham in this Old Trafford showdown in a rematch of their thrilling weekend encounter.

It was only a few days ago when Man United locked horns with the Hammers at the London Stadium in what turned out to be the most exciting 90 minutes of football in the Premier League this season. That showdown had everything: excellent goals, penalty controversies, a late winner, and a stoppage-time drama.

Despite being without club and league top scorer Michail Antonio due to suspension, it was David Moyes’ side who took the lead courtesy of Said Benrahma. However, that advantage did not last long, with Cristiano Ronaldo pulling his side back level only five minutes later to take his tally to four goals in three appearances since returning to the Theatre of Dreams.

Things remained like this for quiet sometime and just as it appeared that the game was headed for a draw, Jesse Lingard stepped up and scored a stunning winner with only one minute left from normal time. Then came stoppage time, which brought about another moment of drama, with Luke Shaw conceding a penalty on the brink of the final whistle. Mark Noble, who had just been introduced, took the spot kick but saw his attempt saved by David de Gea.

It was an excellent result for Solskjaer’s men as it saw them bounce back from their disappointing 2-1 defeat against Young Boys. Unfortunately, West Ham cannot say the same thing as that game brought an end to their lovely run. The London outfit will look to bounce back but it will be interesting to see whether they can get revenge on the 20-time Premier League champions.

Team news

Man United: Rashford and Diallo remain sidelined but Edinson Cavani could mark his return in this clash. Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, who have found game time hard to come by due to the arrival of Raphael Varane, could get a nod in this Carabao Cup tie. Donny van de Beek, Diogo Dalot, and Anthony Martial will also be gunning for minutes.

West Ham: Rice and Soucek will likely be rested. The same goes for Fabianski who could make way for Alphonse Areola. Andriy Yarmolenko could be in for a start but it will be interesting to see whether Antonio will return straight to the lineup after serving his suspension.

Key stats
