Man Utd ‘reignite interest’ in England star targeted last year

Man Utd will look to sign Kieran Trippier again this summer after reportedly reigniting their interest in the full-back.

Trippier left the Premier League in July 2019 to join Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

This season, he followed in the footsteps of Steve McManaman by becoming a La Liga champion, thanks to Luis Suarez’s winning goal on the final day.

But recent reports suggest Trippier is keen on returning to England after representing the Three Lions at the Euros.

And according to Manchester Evening News, Man Utd are the most likely side to land his signature.

They believe Man Utd have ‘revived their interest’ in Trippier and are considering a formal bid.

Trippier, who is out of contract in June 2023, has apparently agreed on a Premier League return with Atletico officials.

He’s hoping to challenge for the title with United, who need to sign reinforcements this summer to compete with rivals Man City.

The Red Devils were initially keen on Trippier last year, although they were put off by his ongoing betting fiasco.

The full-back was banned by the FA in December for breaching betting regulations.

That ban is now behind him and he is free to represent England this month, having made Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad.

The tournament will give United one last look at Trippier before they submit an offer.

The Manchester club have been linked with a host of right-backs ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

It’s thought Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with a new face expected to up his game.

Signing Trippier would also give the manager solid cover in the position in the event of injury.

Trippier came through the City academy before joining Burnley in 2012. He made 185 appearances for the Clarets and was then snapped up by Spurs.

He was part of the Spurs side which reached the Champions League final in 2019, only to lose 2-0 at the hands of Liverpool.

Just weeks after that, his switch to Spain was finalised.

Trippier made 28 La Liga appearances in 2020/21 and notched six assists.

He also played in the Champions League until Atletico’s round of 16 defeat to eventual winners Chelsea.
