Man Utd, Man City linked with £17m move for in-form striker

Man Utd and Man City are both hoping to sign Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has been in exciting form this season, scoring 20 goals in just 18 Austrian Bundesliga matches.

He’s one of Salzburg’s best talents and looks set to become a top-quality player in Europe.

According to sources in Austria (via Express), Man Utd and Man City are both monitoring Daka’s progress.

They’ve sent scouts to watch the striker ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool and Arsenal are also credited with an interest in the striker.

It’s thought that Daka could be signed for as little as £17million, making the deal an attractive one for the Premier League’s biggest teams.

Daka has proven himself to be a dangerous striker in front of goal.

Last season, he scored 27 times in all competitions to formally announce himself as a future star.

West Ham began targeting Daka in January as a potential solution for their problems in attack. It remains to be seen whether they will return in the summer with a formal bid.

Man Utd view Daka as a cheaper alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian goalscorer is their top priority but is also wanted by Real Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

A transfer race is expected to start next year when Haaland could be available for £65million.

If Man Utd are beaten to his signature then Daka looks like a good alternative.

Manchester rivals City are also searching for a new striker. Sergio Aguero is out of contract in June and could be on his way out of the Etihad.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain seem to be his most likely destination, with Barcelona another option.

Gabriel Jesus isn’t seen as a long-term replacement up front, making a transfer possible. City scouts think Daka would fit into their attacking system well.

Daka seems determined to follow in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang by lighting up the Premier League.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said in January: “To see our big brothers like Aubameyang, Salah, [Sadio] Mane, it’s something that gives me the dream that I can also make it.

“I can be like them. They are my inspiration, knowing that they also come from Africa.

“I think when people are making those kind of comparisons, it’s great, looking at the status of Mane, the kind of football he plays and the kind of person that he is.”
