Man Utd loanee poised for ‘sensational return’ and new deal

Jesse Lingard could reportedly be on his way back to Man Utd in the summer to sign a new deal despite rumours he was likely to sign for West Ham.

Lingard joined the Hammers on loan for the rest of the season in January and has hit the ground running at the London Stadium.

He has scored five goals and provided two assists for his West Ham team-mates in just seven Premier League fixtures, leading to a call-up for England.

Lingard played in England’s 5-0 victory over San Marino on Thursday, contributing an assist and being declared man of the match.

And now his form could see him return to Man Utd as an important player with The Sun claiming that the Red Devils ‘are open to a sensational return’ and could open ‘talks over a contract extension’.

The report adds that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been ‘hugely impressed with his performances, and is a long-time fan of the 28-year-old despite freezing him out’ with Lingard only having a just over a year left on his deal.

His recent displays mean Man Utd ‘could be willing to offer him a new three-year contract’ with the Premier League giants interested in keeping his ‘transfer value high while also being able to get him back into Solskjaer first-team plans.’

It was understood that West Ham were looking to seal a deal between £15m and £20m in the summer but now Old Trafford chiefs would want a lot more for their winger.

Meanwhile, Lingard last played for England back in June 2019 and Gareth Southgate was pleased with his man-of-the-match performance against San Marino.

On the Man Utd loanee, Southgate said: “I thought Jesse was excellent.

“First of all, really pleasing to see him playing football, enjoying his football, playing with a smile on his face.

“We know the qualities he has. We gave him his debut 50 games ago and why did we do that? Because he’s a player that technically is good, passes and moves, has intelligence in the positions he takes up.

“He works incredibly hard without the ball to pressure and to win the ball back.

“So, in the main, my first thought is how lovely to see him back playing at the level that we think he can be.”
