Man Utd in ‘very advanced talks’ after Zidane blessing

Manchester United are in ‘very advanced talks’ to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

United have been linked with a long list of centre-backs as possible partners for Harry Maguire, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said to be a big admirer of the Madrid star.

Gary Neville too has described Varane as an “amazing player” who would compliment Maguire “perfectly” at the heart of Solskjaer’s defence.

Varane is out of contract in the summer of 2022 and there has been no talk of a contract extension at the Bernabeu.

Should the Frenchman remain with the La Liga giants this summer, they would face the possibility of losing him for free a year later.

And Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is said to have given his blessing to sell Varane as a result.

United are now in ‘very advanced talks’ to sign the defender, according to El Chiringuito TV – in a move seen as a win-win situation for all parties.

Varane missed both legs of Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final clash with Liverpool, with Nacho and Eder Militao ably stepping up in his absence.

Zidane admitted his side “suffered” in th second leg at Anfield on Wednesday, but insisted his side deserved to go through to the semi-finals, where they will take on Chelsea.

“We have suffered tonight under pressure but we have got through this quarter-final tie,” he said.

“I think we deserve to have got through this round. We knew they would make it hard for us but we controlled parts of the game very well.

“We were very solid. It was a game which was very important for us to get through and we gave it everything we’ve got.”

Jurgen Klopp meanwhile, claimed the tie was lost in Madrid rather than at Anfield.

“We started the game really well. We didn’t lose the tie tonight, we lost the game in Madrid, it was clear,” he said.

“If we had gone 1-0 up it would have been a different game but because of the experience of Real Madrid and their situation we had to chase the game and they controlled the game and had counter-attacking chances themselves.

“With two good performances we would have had a better chance.”
