Man Utd duo select their ‘genius’ toughest opponents

Manchester United duo Fred and Alex Telles have named their toughest opponents.

The Brazilian pair have lined up against some of the finest players in world football over the course of their careers, but had little trouble in naming two of the most feared forwards around as their trickiest opponents.

In a Q&A session on United’s official website, Fred and Telles were asked to select the best they’ve played against.

Brazil international Fred said: “Neymar is a great player, it is so difficult to mark him.

“For me, I think the toughest player I came up against was Messi; he’s out of this world, he’s a genius.

“For me he’s the best in the world, a great player and I think he’s the toughest opponent I’ve played against.”

Telles added: “I’ve come up against a lot of difficult opponents. I answered the same question last week and nothing has changed.

“Neymar was one of the hardest players to mark given his quality, speed and intelligence both with the national team and when we played against PSG.

“He’s a highly versatile player with the power to make such quick decisions, so you have to really concentrate.

“He was one of the hardest players to mark for me and I’m sure numerous other players will say the same thing.”

Meanwhile, one of Telles and Fred’s United teammates Jesse Lingard inspired West Ham to a 3-2 win over Wolves on Monday.

And Gary Neville claims the forward does have a future at Old Trafford, but would have to be willing to be a bit-part player.

“If Jesse wants to play, which he does want to play, you can see, then he’s going to need to leave,” Neville said.

“Because he’s not going to play every single week I suspect in a Manchester United team that’s trying to get to second or first in the league.

“But if he’s willing to go back there and compete and be a player that, Daniel James has come in for the last few weeks and he’s out of the team again, be that type of player who’s a bit in and out.

“There’s no doubt he can play for Manchester United but he’d have to be in that role.”
