Man United target Haaland, Kane to replace Martial

Man United are planning to let Anthony Martial leave this summer and they will target Erling Haaland or Harry Kane as his replacement, according to reports.

Martial joined Man United in 2015 from French outfit Monaco. After netting 12 times the season before, he made the move to the Premier League for an initial fee of around £36m. This could eventually rise to £58m with add-ons.

The forward made a strong start to life at Old Trafford, as he scored 17 goals from his 49 appearances during his first season. This included a debut goal against Liverpool as he helped United win 3-1 in September 2015.

The Frenchman could not reach that goal tally in each of his next three seasons. But he surpassed it in 2019/20 as he grabbed 23 goals from 48 appearances. 17 of these efforts came in the Premier League.

Martial has struggled to replicate that form this campaign, though. He has been in and out of the United team and he has only scored four times from his 22 league outings.

The Mirror are now reporting that the Red Devils are willing to let the forward leave this summer.

The striker’s they are looking at are said to be Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.

United tried to sign Haaland while he was with Red Bull Salzburg, but he opted to join Dortmund. The German outfit signed him for €2om in December 2019.

Since his move, Haaland has continued to be prolific in front of goal. He has 47 goals from 47 appearances for Dortmund.

The attacker played a starring role in the Champions League round of 32 against Sevilla. He got four goals and an assist as Dortmund beat the Spanish side 5-4 on aggregate.

Haaland has a £68m release clause which becomes active at the end of the 2021/22 season. Man United will face competition to sign him, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich among those linked with him.

The report adds that Kane is seen as an alternative for Haaland by United. The Englishman has been linked with a move to Old Trafford before but he would likely attract a world-record fee.
