Man Utd ‘said no’ to Ronaldo despite Mendes prod

Manchester United reportedly turned down the chance to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo last summer despite being urged to do so by super-agent Jorge Mendes.

Ronaldo left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in 2009 before moving to Juventus in 2018.

Italian football journalist Emanuele Gamba claims Mendes was angling for the 36-year-old to return to United only for Ed Woodward to pull the plug on the deal.

Having been knocked out of the Champions League by Porto on Tuesday, rumours have again emerged that Ronaldo could be heading for the exit this summer.

Gamba told Calciomercato: “Will he leave? I think the only time there was a chance for that was last summer, and I think his staff moved in that direction.

“I believe Mendes moved to see if there were any possibilities and did not find them. I doubt that a year later, with an even older and more out of fashion Ronaldo, these possibilities will reappear.”

“Essentially, Mendes had urged Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United to make a move, who both said no.

“Frankly, I don’t see the possibility of anything different happening now, at least in Europe.”
