Harry Maguire ‘confronted’ Man Utd executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over proposals that could see the Red Devils join a European Super League, according to reports.
The announcement on Sunday evening that United, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool will form part of a new European Super League sent shockwaves through football.
There are concerns over the closed format of the competition that would see 15 of the 20 teams guaranteed a place in the tournament every season with only five other European clubs allowed in each year.
MAILBOX: Don’t cry-arse over Super League. This is all your fault…
Fears have also been raised about how it could impact the rest of the football pyramid with concerns it will only serve to make the rich clubs even wealthier.
Man Utd co-owner Joel Glazer has been appointed the vice-chairman of the new Super League but it’s a move that has gone down like a lead balloon in the dressing room at Old Trafford.
Mike Keegan in the Daily Mail claims that United players were left ‘seriously unimpressed’ after Woodward held ‘an emergency briefing’ on Monday morning with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
Man Utd insiders have told the newspaper that ‘some members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad were angered after they found out about the breakaway European Super League’ while ‘some also felt Solskjaer was thrown under the bus when left to face questions from Sky’ with no warning.
It is understood that Woodward ‘delivered a briefing via Zoom to explain the club’s position at their training base’ with ‘the reception among many of the squad’ said to be ‘lukewarm at best’.
The source told the Daily Mail: ‘Some of the players were seriously unimpressed. Not only that they were left to find out by the media about what had happened but that their manager was left to face the press when the owners had concocted this.
‘Woodward attempted to appease them but the response was lukewarm at best. It hasn’t gone down well with many of them.’
And Keegan added more details in a tweet on Tuesday morning, he wrote: “Bit more info on this from yesterday. I understand that Harry Maguire confronted Ed Woodward at the meeting over the players (who went out and played on Sky as the news broke) not knowing about the plans. Fair play to the United captain.”
